Background: Transradial coronary intervention (TRI) has become more popular due to its comfort and less access site complications. However, it is controversial whether or not these beneficial aspects can be translated equally into all age groups when compared to transfemoral intervention (TFI) simultaneously at the same time period. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of age on procedural success rate in patients undergoing TRI. Methods: A total of 5,694 patients enrolled in the TRI retrospective registry from 16 institutions in Korea between Jan. 2009 and Dec. 2009 were stratified into three age groups (<65 years, 6574 years, and 75 years). At each age group, procedural success rate was compared between TRI and TFI. Results: There was no significant difference in procedural success rate between TRI and TFI across all age groups [age <65 group (n=2,770): 99.6% vs. 99.5%, p=NS; age 6574 group (n=1,775): 99.5% vs. 98.7%, p=0.244; age ≥75 group (n=1,159): 99.2% vs. 98.3%, p=0.258]. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that, when compared to age <65 group, odds ratio of age ≥75 group was 1.9 (95% CI 0.391-9.680, p=0.417) in TRI subgroup and 3.8 (95% CI 1.272-11.437, p=0.017) in TFI subgroup. Conclusions: This study showed that there was no significant difference in procedural success rate between TRI and TFI in all age groups. This study implies that TRI are feasible with the success rate comparable to TFI in elderly patients.
