The Changes of Cardiac Structure and Function in Morbid Obesity |

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the structural and functional changes of the heart in obesity
Methods: A total of 96 subjects [M:F=28:68, mean age=32.3±9.7 years, mean body mass index (BMI)= 40.8±8.2 kg/m2] with no prior history of heart disease were evaluated using transthoracic echocardiography. These subjects were divided into 5 groups by BMI based on World Health Organization (WHO) classification and compared with 10 controls (M:F=5:5, mean age=29.7±9.5 years, mean BMI=21.9±2.0 kg/m2).
Results: Left ventricular (LV) chamber dimension, left atrial (LA) dimension, and relative wall thickness (RWT) increased according to the severity of obesity. However, there were no significant differences in LV systolic and diastolic function (see Table).
Conclusion: The cardiac structure changes in relation with the severity of obesity. Meanwhile, the cardiac function is relatively preserved.
