Background: The first generation Paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES; Taxus Express) had been widely used since the initial period and replaced to next generation PES (Taxus Liberte) with anticipating better outcomes. However, the differences in overall clinical outcomes between two different Taxus stents in real world clinical practice are largely unknown in Asian patients (pts).Method: We evaluated 710 pts who received Taxus stent from March 2005 to April 2008 (Taxus Express; up to May 2006, Taxus Liberte; since June 2006) who have completed six- month follow up. Mid-term clinical outcomes of Taxus Express group (E-group, n=458 pts) were compared with those of Taxus Liberte group (L-Group, n=252 pts). Result: The baseline characteristics showed more risk factors including old age (74.2% vs. 62.4%, p=0.002), AMI (43.7% vs. 29.5%, p<0.001) hypertension (67.1% vs. 52.0%, p<0.001), hyperlipidemia (28.2% vs. 9.6%, p<0.001) and smoking (36.9% vs. 26.0%, p<0.001) in the L group. The L group had more CTO lesions (10.8% vs. 5.0%, p<0.001), diffuses long lesions (46.0% vs. 33.2%, p=0.001) and calcified lesions (24.2% vs. 10.7%, p<0.001) whereas the E group had more bifurcation lesions (34.3% vs. 22.6%, p=0.001) and small vessel disease (41.5% vs. 31.3%, p<0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that there was a trend toward higher incidence of target lesion revascularization (TLR) in the L group. Other important clinical outcomes including major adverse cardiac event (MACE) at 6 months were similar between the two group (Table).Conclusion: Despite the unfavorable baseline characteristics, the pts received Taxus Liberte stent showed similar clinical outcomes up to 6 months compared with the pts received Taxus Express stent.
