Background: Aortic stiffness is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We tried to evaluate the utility of 2D strain imaging of thoracic aorta in precise determining the aortic stiffness in hypertensive patients. Methods: A total of 25 patients with hypertension and 19 normal control were enrolled. Transesophageal echocardiography was performed for evaluation of embolic origin or valvular abnormality and pulse wave velocity (PWV) was performed. Off-line analysis of 2D strain was performed in short axis view of descending thoracic aorta. Results: There was significant difference in age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), PWV, stiffness index (β) and circumferential strain (Sc) (table 1). Sc was correlated with age, β and PWV (table 2). Conclusion : The thoracic aortic circumferential strain imaging can precisely assess the aortic stiffness in hypertension patients.
