Background : The second-generation durg-eluting Taxus Liberte stent was evolved from Taxus Express stent to enhance stent deliverability and uniform drug delivery. This study was designed to compare angiographic and clinical outcomes of new Taxus Liberte stent and old Taxus Express stent in the real world.
Methods : Between 2006 and 2008, a total of 240 patients receiving the Taxus Liberte stent at 3 centers were registered and compared to Taxus Express historical control patients (n=272). The primary end-point was major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including death, MI and revascularization at 1 year. Additional angiographic assessment was conducted at 9-12 months.
Results : Procedure related MI was lower in Taxus Liberte (9%) than Taxus Express (16.3%, p=0.008). At 1 year follow up, total MACE was 5.15% in the Taxus Express group and 4.17% in the Taxus Liberte group (p=0.600). Stent thrombosis occurred in 3 patient (1.25%) of Taxus Liberte stent. From the angiography, there was no significant difference on acute gain index (0.87±0.12 vs. 0.88±0.28 p=0.485), loss index (0.24±0.23 vs. 0.21±0.21 p=0.186). Binary angiographic restenosis was higher in Taxus Express group (6.3%) than Taxus Liberte group (2.9%) without statistical significance (p=0.181).
Conclusions : In this real-world experience with the historical two Taxus stents, both stents showed good clinical outcomes. There were no differences in the angiographic and clinical outcomes.
