Background: Advanced age has known to independently predict early and late mortality and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, whether the age can similarly predict the angiographic and clinical outcomes after PCI, especially in the drug-eluting stent (DES) era is not well known.
Method: A total 844 patients (pts) underwent PCI with DES were enrolled. According to pts’ age, they were divided into 3 groups: <50 years (n=106 pts, 247 lesions), 50-70 years (n=463 pts, 729 lesions) and >70 years (n=275 pts, 441 lesions). Angiographic and clinical outcomes at 6 months were compared.
Result: Baseline data showed that the aged pts had more hypertension, diabetes and female gender than the younger pts. At 6 months, all the angiographic outcomes were not different among the age groups. However, the >70 years group had significantly higher incidences of mortality and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) than those of <50 years and 50-70 years group despite the absence of angiographic adverse outcomes compared with the younger age (Table).
Conclusion: Although advanced age did not exert a predictive value for the angiographic outcomes, advanced age itself has adversely impacted on the clinical outcomes in pts underwent PCI with DES, especially in terms of increased mortality and MACE.
