Background
Traditional right heart catheterization was performed via the femoral vein. Femoral approach requires bed rest, admission and increases the risk of bleeding, hematoma. There is little studies for right heart catheterization via the cephalic vein. So, we evaluated the feasibility of right cardiac catheterization via the cephalic vein.
Methods & Material
The medical records of all right heart catheterization at our hospital between January 2003 and July 2008 were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic characteristics (age, sex, height, weight, BMI), PT(INR), aPTT, procedure time, pain and complications were recorded and used for comparison between right heart catheterization via the cephalic vein groups and the femoral vein ones.
Results
Total 96 cases (25 : cephalic vein approach, 71 : femoral vein approach) were reviewed. Both groups had similar demographic characteristics, PT(INR), aPTT. Procedure time were shorter (P = 0.039) with cephalic vein 13.6 ± 5.0 min (95% CI) vs. femoral 20.63 ± 6.8 (95% CI). Pain scale were lower (P = 0.025) with cephalic vein 0.68 ± 0.63 min (95% CI) vs. femoral 1.23 ± 1.14 min (95% CI). There were no complications on both groups.
Conclusion
Right cardiac catheterization via the cephalic vein was performed safely and quickly. Our study suggested that cephalic vein could be used an alternative access site in the case of need for right heart catheterization.
