Background Selection of the adequate device size is an important step in device closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), but often limited by inadequate imaging by conventional angiography. Methods To evaluate the usefulness of 3D computed tomographic angiography (CTA) by multidetector CT (MDCT) in the device closure of PDA, 12 consecutive patients (38.5±13.5 years, 10 females) with PDA were scanned 3D CTA before device closure. The diameter of PDA were measured by four experienced personnel (2 for conventional angiography, 2 for 3D CTA) without knowing the used size of the device. The adequacy or accuracy of the obtained image to estimate PDA size were compared. Results Adequate image was obtained in all patients (100%) by 3D CTA and 9 patients (75%) by conventional angiography. The correlation coefficient of the measured size of PDA comparing the used size of the device was higher in 3D CTA (r=-0.974 by examiner A, r=-0.980 by B) than in conventional angiography (r=-0.664 by C, r=-0.688 by D). Conclusion The results of this study demonstrated that 3D CTA by MDCT is very useful and feasible method in the percutaneous device closure of PDA.
