Objectives: We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to aircraft noise on prevalence of hypertension (HT) and arterial stiffness. Methods: We studied 623 subjects (335 men, 58±16 years) who have lived more than 10 years within 5 km of military airbase as exposed group, and 252 subjects (152 men, 58±16 years) not exposed to aircraft noise as control group. BP (HEM-907, Omron) and Pulse wave velocity (PWV; PP-1000, Hanbyul Meditech, Korea) were measured. HT was defined as systolic BP (SBP)≥140mmHg, diastolic BP (DBP)≥90mmHg, or current use of antihypertensives. Results: See the table. Prevalence of HT around Helicopter airbase (n=137, 60±14 years, mean LAeq8hr=71.8dB(A)) was higher than control (54.0 vs. 41.7%, p=0.020). Although not significant, prevalence of HT around Fighter airbase (n=486, 58±16 years, mean LAeq8hr=76.3dB(A)) was higher than control (48.1 vs. 41.7%, p=0.094). Prevalence odds ratio of HT adjusted for age, sex, and BMI was 1.25 (95%CI 0.91~1.73, p=0.175). Conclusions: Chronic exposure to aircraft noise may be associated with increased prevalence of HT. The character of noise, not the noise level, seems to be an important factor for increased prevalence of HT.
