Background and objectives : C-reactive protein (CRP) , a marker of systemic low-grade
inflammation, and microalbuminuria have been reported to be potential risk factor for hypertension and predict cardiovascular prognosis, independently.
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between CRP and microalbuminuria.
Subjects and Methods : Subjects of this cross-sectional study were apparently healthy individuals drawn from the general Korean population (mean age, 47; men, 3,053; women, 2,852)
Hs-CRP and microalbuminuria was measured by nephelometry and radioimmunoassay, respectively.
Results : Glucose, insulin, HOMA, T-cholesterol, Triglyceride, Apolipoprotein B, BMI, Wait circumference, blood pressure and Hs-CRP were significantly associated with microalbuminuria. The correlation between CRP and microalbuminuria were not modified by hypertension (p=0.485).
A following table show increasing in the prevalence of microalbuminuria with increasing CRP quintiles after controlling for other risk factors.
Conclusions : Low-grade inflammation as presented by high sensitivity CRP levels was significantly associated with microalbuminuria. The relationship between CRP and microalbuminuria were not affected by hypertension.
