The relationship of gamma-glutamyltransferase and arterial stiffness in healthy men

Backgrounds: Multiple biomarkers are associated with the endothelial dysfunction. Recently it has been suggested that gamma-glutamyltransferase(GGT) is independently associated with cardiovascular mortality and atherosclerosis. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a valid maker of arterial stiffness and there have been many reports dealing with PWV and the development of atherosclerotic diseases. However, the specific role of serum GGT in relation to early atherosclerosis remains unclear, and the relationship between GGT and arterial stiffness has not been fully investigated. So we designed this study to investigate relationship between biomarkers included GGT and arterial stiffness. Methods and Results : A total of 450 males who underwent a routine health checkup at Kosin University hospital were enrolled. No patients had a past history of peripheral arterial disease, aortic disease, or severe renal dysfunction. Subjects whose ankle-brachial index was more than 1.3 and less than 0.95 were excluded to ensure the accuracy of brachial- ankle(ba) PWV measurement. GGT, CRP, baPWV, and conventional risk factors were evaluated. Results The mean ages were 51.1 ±4.8 years for males. The mean GGT values were 51.2 ±81.2 U/L and the mean PWV values were 1406 ±194 cm/sec at right baPWV and 1405 ± 194 cm/sec at left baPWV. There were significant relationships with both baPWVs and serum GGT (95% CI, Right baPWV p=0.002, left baPWV p=0.001). Other parameter including history of DM, HTN, sodium concentrations were associated with baPWV. But on multivariate analysis, serum GGT was the only biomarker correlated with the baPWV( p=0.034). Conclusion: These results suggest that GGT is independently associated with an increased level of arterial stiffness and reflects that serum GGT can be used as a early marker of atherosclerosis. Further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of GGT’s contribution to arteriosclerosis and to confirm the current results.
