Background and Objectives : Patients can reduce the risk for a second heart attack by following secondary prevention measures. The aims of this study were to evaluate the control rate of risk components of secondary prevention for coronary heart disease in smokers. Materials and Methods : This study included 101 patients, aged 31-85 years, with previous myocardial infarction. All patients were smokers at that time of the heart attack. We evaluated components of secondary prevention (serum cholesterol, blood pressure [BP] levels, smoking habits, body mass index [BMI], serum cholesterol and glucose) in all patients one year after heart attack. Target goal was based on the ACC/AHA guideline for secondary prevention for patient with coronary heart disease. Results : Smoking cessation rate was 50% at immediately after discharge. 11% of those patients re-started smoking in the period of 6 months to 1 year. Serum LDL-cholesterol level < 100mg/dl, BMI < 25 and BP < 140/90 mmHg were achieved in 50%, 19% and 83% of all patients, respectively. HbA1C level < 7% were reached in 36% of diabetic patients. Conclusions : The secondary prevention program based on a rehabilitator is necessary in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Initiating the smoking cessation program during the hospital stay followed by repeated counseling during follow up might have improved the results..
