Background: There has been controversy that whether women are associated with more complications and worse prognosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) than men or not. We investigated the impact of gender difference on the mid-term clinical outcomes in patients (pts) undergoing PCI with drug-eluting stents (DES) in a series of Asian population. Method: A total 945 consecutive pts (623 male) who underwent PCI with DESs were enrolled. At 6 months, routine angiographic follow up and clinical outcomes including mortality, repeat PCI, Q-wave myocardial infarction (Q-MI), and total major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were compared between women and men. Result: At baseline, females were older than males (mean age 68.9 짹 8.7 years vs. 60.9 짹 11.1 years, P<0.001). Incidence of AMI was similar between females and males (27.9% vs. 29.8%, P=0.542). Hypertension and diabetes was more prevalent in females (58.3% vs. 47.3%, P=0.001, 33.5% vs. 26.3%, P=0.020, respectively). During six months follow up, death was occurred 22 (6.8%) in females and 12 (1.9%) in males (P<0.001). Repeat PCI were 25 (7.8%) in females and 49 (7.9%) in males (P=0.956). There were only 5 cases of AMI during the follow up period (4 for male, 1 for female). Total MACE was 52 (16.1%) in female and 70 (11.2%) in males (P=0.033). However, after adjusting all the confounding factors (age, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, hyperlipidemia, chronic renal insufficiency), there was no difference in major clinical outcomes between females and males. However, only the age was associated with higher mortality rate (odd ratio=1.089, 95% CI 1.043~1.136, P<0.001). Conclusion: There was no obvious difference in mid-term clinical outcomes in pts undergoing PCI with DESs according to the gender difference in an Asian population.
