Background-Elevated sympathetic tone is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of stress-induced cardiomyopathy. Sympathetic blockade by stellate ganglion block (SGB) might have therapeutic or preventive effect on stress-induced cardiomyopathy. Materials and Results-We adopted 40 min of immobilization stress to make stress-induced cardiomyopathy animal model. Two groups of rats were investigated: a sham-operated control group (group 1, n = 10) received SGB with normal saline and SGB group were treated with 1% lidocaine before immobilization (group 2, n = 10). Echocardiography, electrocardiogram, and heart rate variability (HRV) were recorded from immobilization to 60 min after immobilization. Fractional shortening (FS) was measured. Immobilization stress resulted in a significant reduction of FS in group 1 whereas the reduction of FS was modest in group 2. In addition, FS returned to normal within 40 mins after immobilization in group 2 whereas FS continued to deteriorate after immobilization in group 1. Tachycardia and the magnitude of ST depression during stress could be attenuated by SGB. Conclusions-SGB before immobilization stress could attenuate stress-induced left ventricular dysfunction in a rat model.
