Purpose: Low serum adiponectin level is associated with hypertension and dyslipidemia. The aim of this study was to find out whether lowering the blood pressure increases serum adiponectin level. Methods: Among 6551 subjects enrolled in the Korean Metabolic Syndrome Research Cluster, 390 hypertensive patients (pts) (mean age=52±10, Male 65.9 %), who are taking antihypertensive drugs, were selected. Pts were divided into two groups [high blood pressure(high-BP) group (systolic BP≥130 mmHg or diastolic BP≥85 mmHg) and low blood pressure (low-BP) group (systolic BP<130 mmHg or diastolic BP<85 mmHg)], then each groups were divided into metabolic syndrome (Met) group and non-metabolic syndrome (nMet) group. In the four groups, serum adiponectin level, serum insulin level and lipid profiles were compared, respectively. Results: 1 Serum adiponectin level was not correlated with SBP (r=0.027, p=0.599) or DBP (r=-0.006, p=0.903) in hypertensive pts. 2. There were no significant difference between high-BP groups and low-BP groups in serum adiponectin level. 3. There were significant difference between Met groups and nMet groups in serum adiponectin level. (table) Conclusion: In hypertensive pts, BP was not correlated with serum adiponectin level and lowering BP does not increase adiponectin level. Therefore, other components of metabolic syndrome beyond BP should be corrected in hypertensive pts with low adiponectin level.
