Background: In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effect, statins have life saving pleiotrophic effects. This study aimed to clarify the effect of statin on cardiac electrophysiological properties in hypertensive patients. Methods: One hundred thirty three patients who have hypertension comprised the study group were divided into 2 groups retrospectively: group I [57 patients, 62.9±8.9 years, 39 male; no statin administration] and group II [76 patients, 61.8±10.6 years, 42 male; statin administration]. Baseline clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and signal-averaged ECG (SA-ECG) finding for both P wave and QRS complex were compared between the two groups. The dispersion for the P wave, QT, corrected QT interval (QTc) using the Bazett formula and QT dispersion ratio (QTdR) which is defined as QT dispersion divided by cycle length were also compared between the two groups. Results: Baseline clinical characteristics, laboratory findings and left ventricular ejection fraction were not significantly different between the 2 groups. The ECG parameters including P wave dispersion, QT dispersion, QTc dispersion and QTdR were not significantly different between the 2 groups. SA-ECG parameters for QRS [filtered QRS duration, the root mean square voltage of the last 40 ms (RMS 40), duration of the terminal low (40 mV) amplitude (LAS 40)] were not significantly different but, filtered P wave duration was significantly shorter in Group II (Group I:Group II=146.8±36.4:131.5±30.3, p=0.012). Conclusions We could know statin administration in hypertensive patients change the electrical conduction properties of the atrium. Prospective randomized studies are needed.
