Purpuse:The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of smoking on the development of hypertension in a screened cohort of men with normal blood pressure.
Methods: A total 1058 men who participated in the 1997 and 2002 health screening examination in Seoul Korea, and who were normal blood pressure in 1997 were eligible for study.
Results: In 2002, systolic hypertension developed in 18.3% of participants and diastolic hypertension developed in 11.0%. The incidence of newly developed systolic hypertension was associated with pack-year of cigarettes smoking after adjustment for age and alcohol consumption.(p=0.04 in systolic hypertension, p=0.55 in diastolic hypertension). The multivariate adjusted analysis showed that the relative risk (95% confidence interval) of developing systolic hypertension was 1.105 (0.723 to 1.687), p= 0.045 and diastolic hypertension was 1.195 (0.852 to 1.677), p=0.301 for cigarette smoking.
Conclusion : Our results suggest that the risk of developing systolic hypertension was associated with cigarette smoking in men of Korea.
