BackgroundRecent studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome(MS) increased in pre-hypertension and hypertension than in normotension. We evaluated the difference of the MS components exept for blood pressure according to the blood pressure status.Patients and methodOur study enrolled 1,265 indivisuals taking no anti-hypertensive and anti-lipidemic medication. Subjects were divided into the three groups according to the blood pressure status using the JNC-7 criteria. Group I was defined as normotensive state individuals, group II as pre-hypertensive and group III as hypertensive. We evaluated the anthropometric and biochemical variables in three groups. ResultsThe mean age of the subjects was 59 years(range 24-80) and women were 60.5%. The prevalence of the MS was 7%,19%, and 46% in the three groups, respectively. There were significant differences with respect to age, homocysteine, BMI, waist circumference(WC), serum fasting glucose(FG), serum fasting insulin, the homeostasis model of assessment of insulin resistance, serum creatinine, serum uric acid, serum total cholesterol, TG, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol among the three groups. The results of logistic regression analysis about the MS components affecting the presence or absence of the MS among the three groups were shown in Table 1. ConclusionsOur findings show that the abdominal adipocity has more strong relationship with the MS than other MS components in higher blood pressure groups .
